Lake Effect

Instead of waking to her alarm, Veronica awoke to the voice of the local weather man. He was announcing that a lake effect snow advisory was in effect for Chautauqua, Genesee, and Erie Counties. She quickly rose from her pillow and anxiously watched the scrolling list of school closings which appeared at the top of the television screen. She had been up late hanging out with her friends and desperately wanted to catch a few more hours of sleep.
"Please, please, please" she begged the television to announce her schools name. Looking outside from her bedroom window she could see the blowing snow and could hear the aggressive whistling of the wind as it created near white out conditions. This brief glance of old mans fury caused her to miss her schools listing, now she would have to wait for the scroll to repeat itself in order to see if her school was listed. They came across the screen in alphabetical order, her school a D, the screen on F.
"For God's sake" she cried aloud.
She temporarily gave up on the screen to make a pot of coffee. The kitchen reinforced her need to climb back in bed. The cold air was working itself under the doorway which led to the porch, cooling the kitchen floor and sending a chill up her spine. The coffee quickly warmed her and she began to feel life returning to her body.
She began to think of the summer and what it had to offer. She enjoyed water sports and lived just blocks from the lake. Just laying in the sand and taking in the sun was an enjoyable way to blow off some time for her. She then began to think of winter and how it was much nicer than spring. The lake may freeze over but she often went skiing. She ventured to the Allegheny mountains once with a bunch of her friends and their snowboards. The town became dead when it snowed like this and life seemed to stand still. She loved it when it was like that because she could then meet up with her snowmobile buddies and not have to worry about the police harassing them.
"Maybe that's what I'll do today", she thought, "The coffee woke me up pretty good and after a hot shower I should be ready to go. Lets have some fun today!"
Her mood began to improve. She finished her cup of coffee and jumped in the shower. During her performance of Joan Jett's I love Rock and Roll in which the shower head became a microphone and sound of the water hitting the shower curtain was transformed into her audience screaming in envy, she was interrupted by the loud beeping of a horn. Just seconds after the annoying sound of the horn invaded her apartment her cell phone began to ring.
"Oh no!" she cried,"What time is it?".
Her suspicion was right. It was her ride to school. The weather man had let her down. She rushed to get ready for the day in school. With this new discovery her mood became somber and she was once again tired.
"I better throw on an extra sweater, damned that superintendent."
